Students often ask
for calculator recommendations. Below is the list
of calculators recommended and used by the COS
Mathematics Faculty. Certainly there are other options
that are just a good with similar features from other
brands.

Basic Calculator - TI-30Xa
Scientific Calculator |
|
This calculator is appropriate for all courses at
COS where calculators are required.
The TI-30Xa is a solid solution for general math,
algebra, trigonometry and statistics. Calculator has
variable statistics to include results for mean and
standard deviation and is useful to add, subtract,
multiply and divide fractions entered in traditional
numerals. Battery powered. Slide-on case is included.

Graphing Calculator - TI-83 Plus
Graphing Calculator |
|
This calculator is appropriate for all courses at
COS where graphing calculators are allowed. Recommended
for students who want a graphing utility and are on a
track toward statistics.
TI-83—TI's most popular graphing calculator—enhanced
with 160K flash ROM for electronic upgrades and new
applications, and 24K RAM. It also has an eight-line,
16-character display, and seven different graphing
styles including such functions as financial, calculus,
trigonometry, equation solving, statistical, graphic,
forecasting, engineering, logarithms, hyperbolic and
slide rule.

Approximate Cost:
$100.00 -$115.00 |
|
For an extra $20.00 -
$30.00 consider the TI-84 Plus,
keystroke-for-keystroke the same as the TI-83 with
expanded capabilities like a built-in
USB port, 3x the memory, many preloaded
Apps and an improved display. |

CAS Graphing Calculator - TI-89
Titanium |
|
This calculator is appropriate for all courses at
COS where handheld CAS systems are allowed.
Recommended for the serious science student but it may
not be allowed on exams and has a steep learning curve!
The TI-89 Titanium Graphing Calculator
features two times the memory of the original TI-89.
Completes complex math functions such as Calculus,
Algebra, Trigonometry, Electrical Engineering
calculations and advanced statistics. Features 3-D
graphing and real time rotation, contour and implicit
plots.
Easily calculate derivatives and
integrals, limits, maximum/minimum, sequences and
series. Solve equations including systems of linear and
nonlinear equations. Differential equations can be
solved numerically, symbolically, and graphically
including slope and directional fields. Advanced
statistics functionality including multiple
regressions/tests/intervals, ANOVA 2-way, and goodness
of fit. Physical constants and unit conversions—great
for Engineering and Physics. Powerful vector and matrix
calculations and functions. Calculation of eigenvalues
and eigenvectors. |

Approximate Cost:
$152.00 -$175.00
Built-in USB port! |
